A resurgent auto industry saw a boost in sales across the board in 2012, led by a 21 percent gain from Chrysler Group LLC.

The Auburn Hills automaker in 2012 posted its best sales year in five years, the company said Thursday, after selling 1.65 million vehicles last year.

Chrysler and Ram brands each topped 300,000 sales last year; Dodge topped 524,000 with a strong December. Sales for the Dodge brand rose 26 percent in December, boosted by sales of the Journey and new Dart compact car.

Overall, the Auburn Hills automaker had a 10 percent rise in December sales compared to December 2011. Chrysler sold 152,367 vehicles last month.
