More than three-quarters of a million people are expected to walk through the turnstiles at this year's North American International Auto Show to see the cars of the future.

But for those who can't make it in person, or want another layer of coverage while perusing hundreds of vehicles, there is a growing alternative: social media.

For the first time, the auto show has its own smartphone app. The show app comes with a virtual show floor map, show hours, parking and ticket prices. There's also a virtual guide to Detroit, including restaurants and businesses, and weather forecasts and live radar. The app will interface with other social media platforms such as Twitter, where users can stream topics that include the hashtag #NAIAS.
