New York — Automakers are rolling out more than two dozen new cars and SUVs at the New York International Auto Show this week, as the industry races to get new and refreshed models into showrooms faster.

Buffeted by rising auto sales and pent-up consumer demand, U.S. and foreign automakers are turning over vehicles faster than ever.

The number of new product launches will rise 57 percent to 141 this year, from 90 in 2012, according to research firm R.L. Polk. Full-scale redesigns will double to 60 this year from 29 in 2012, while face-lifts — or model refreshes — are basically flat — going from 38 in 2012 to 40 in 2013.

In the past, automakers might have waited six, seven or eight years before a full redesign but competitive pressures are prompting automakers to move faster — to redo vehicles every four or five years — if not sooner.
