DETROIT - On the southwest corner of Beaubien and Lafayette streets in Detroit, there’s a large brick building occupied by restaurants and bars.

To most, it’s a place to have dinner or grab a drink after work. But that corner, like many in the Motor City, has a historical footprint of how Detroit "put the world on wheels."

It was on that location that David Dunbar Buick started his Buick Auto-Vim and Power Co., which we now know to be General Motors Co.’s Buick brand.

“(Buick) started out in Detroit and always was considered a guy that liked to dabble and play with different things of interest at the time, and went from plumbing to stationary engines,” said Greg Wallace, manager and historian of the GM Heritage Center, which stores historical cars and documents.
