Jeep enthusiasts are starting to embrace a more aerodynamic design of the new Cherokee even though some initially disliked photos, said Jeep chief Mike Manley.

The new SUV, which debuts next week at the New York auto show, looks much more like a crossover than the boxy Cherokee that consumers loved in the 1980s.

Jeep is closely monitoring reaction, and officials realized that they were taking a risk when they married the historic name with the modern-looking model.
