Ford Motor and General Motors announced big steps Monday to create more apps for their respective infotainment systems.

Ford, as a prelude to CES here, says that it is the first automaker to launch an open developer program that will bring interesting apps to market faster.

Even as it looks to apps of the future, Ford disclosed a handful of new apps that have already been created that are ready to become part of the company's Sync system. One of them is a new USA TODAY app that will read articles aloud to drivers and passengers.
