Ford Motor Co. and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute are launching an innovation contest for undergraduate students to create vehicle-to-vehicle communications technologies.

Teams of students from a variety of disciplines — and from other universities — will develop new applications that benefit road users — from cars to commercial vehicles, buses, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians — in the areas of safety, mobility and sustainability.

"This is a generation who has grown up with technology at their fingertips," said Francine Romine, UMTRI spokeswoman. "We will mentor them, share with them what we know and let their creative energies go to work."
