Charles Kimbrough recently returned to work at the Dearborn Truck Plant after three months away from his job.

He wasn't on vacation and he wasn't on layoff. He was recovering after a heart attack at the plant, and an ensuing quadruple-bypass surgery.

But Kimbrough, 61, might not be at work — or alive — if not for quick decisions by a handful of co-workers who recently had undergone emergency response training now required by Ford Motor Co.

It was during a scorching hot morning during July shutdown that Kimbrough, a plant electrician who has worked at Ford for nearly four decades, collapsed. Fellow workers Pete Zeolla, Butch Trombley and James Weber, who don't normally work the same shift as Kimbrough, were nearby when another employee called for help.
