Pickup truck sales in Northeast Ohio skyrocketed in February, pushing General Motors sales up nearly 20 percent.

"You have a lot of pent up demand in the market," said Pat O'Brien, general manager of Westlake's Pat O'Brien Chevrolet. With auto sales way below historic levels in 2008, 2009 and 2011, the average age of pickups has gone up, and many of those trucks are wearing out.

The Northeast Ohio numbers are exaggerated versions of the nationwide statistics that automakers reported earlier this month. Nationwide, for example, Chevrolet Silverado sales were up 29 percent. In Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, Portage, Summit, Medina and Lorain counties, Silverado sales were up 74 percent, according to state registration data collected by AutoViewOnline.com.
