General Motors Co. said Thursday that it has honored 83 global automotive suppliers as 2012 Supplier of the Year award winners in recognition for their technology, quality, crisis management and competitive cost.

The awards are given to less than 1 percent of GM's about 18,500 global suppliers. This year's award winners are based in 17 countries (26 are based in the U.S.); five are certified diverse suppliers; and 46 were winners in 2011.

"Suppliers play a critical role in our business, and we're thrilled to recognize those we consider to be world-class," Grace Lieblein, GM vice president of global purchasing and supply chain, said in a statement. "Each winning company consistently exceeded our expectations by being innovative, delivering high-quality products and services on time and by creating outstanding value."
