General Motors Co. is resurrecting the diesel passenger car in the United States, as it becomes the first U.S. automaker to take on German automakers offering diesel cars here.
GM will unveil its 2013 Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel at the Chicago Auto Show today. It will go on sale this summer.
"We leveraged our global engineering expertise to take a great diesel engine from Europe and improve it to meet the stringent U.S. standards," said Gary Altman, chief engineer for Chevrolet's small cars. "We expect the Cruze to compete head-to-head with the German diesel, particularly the Volkswagen Jetta TDI."
The new diesel Cruze will get an estimated 42 miles per gallon on the highway.
