General Motors Co. said Wednesday that its OnStar subsidiary has been accredited by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch as a Medical Accredited Center of Excellence.

OnStar is the first non-emergency service, private company to be accredited with such an award by the agency, GM said. OnStar is meeting criteria that less than 5 percent of 911 call centers achieve, according to the Detroit automaker.

Through OnStar's First Assist service, specially trained advisors can provide medical instructions to people as they wait for help to arrive.
