Last year was the best year ever for Chrysler Group LLC's Jeep brand, which sold more than 700,000 vehicles worldwide for the first time.

Jeep sold 701,626 units in 2012, besting the brand's previous full-year record of 675,494 units from 1999.

Jeep President Michael Manley told The Detroit News that is "ahead of where I hoped we'd be" and puts the brand on track to meet its stated goal of selling 800,000 vehicles annually by 2014.

"Last year was actually very quiet in terms of new product. But '13 is going to be a very, very busy," Manley said, noting this year will see the introduction of significantly refreshed versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Compass.
