An uptick in the housing market and rising consumer confidence kept U.S. car and pickup shoppers streaming into showrooms, resulting in another month of strong results that will be evident on Friday when auto makers post their February sales.

More than 1.2 million new vehicles were estimated to have been sold in the month, a 4.3% increase over a year earlier and a 15% increase over January, according to Edmunds.com.
