Suddenly, it's looking like 2003. Pickups -- and to a lesser degree, luxury and near-luxury cars -- are driving the Detroit Three's profits. Conversely, Toyota, Honda and Nissan again are dominating the midsize and compact markets.

"I'm seeing a return to strength of brand," said Michelle Krebs, who tracks the industry for retail consulting firm Ed-munds.com. "Consumers go to brands they've long known and loved."

Consider this: Ford sold 67,513 F-Series pickups in March. That's more than its three best-selling cars combined (Fusion, Focus and Taurus). The soon-to-be updated Chevrolet Silverado was the second-best selling vehicle at 39,561, but no GM car sold more than 23,260 last month.
