All three Detroit automakers and most of their foreign competitors have posted solid sales increases for January as pent-up demand and selected discounting in certain segments pulled a steady flow of consumers to their showrooms.

Many automakers are reporting their best January sales in at least five years, making it a strong start to a year that is expected to finish with sales in the 15 million to 16 million range.

Ford reported sales of 166,501 vehicles last month -- a 22% increase with gains across the lineup with the exception of the Lincoln brand, which fell 18% from a year ago despite the freshening of the lineup.
