American automakers said on Wednesday that sales of pickup trucks rose sharply in April because of a revival in the housing market and increased demand from the oil and gas industry.
Ford sales boomed to an 18% gain in April to 212,584, driven by its best April for pickup trucks since 2005.
Ford reported an April sales increase of 18%, while General Motors and Chrysler each enjoyed 11% gains, bolstered by a strong stock market, rising home prices and many consumers’ need to replace old vehicles.
General Motors said its April sales were the best for that month in five years, up 11.4% to 237,646 new vehicles.
